Ujjain's 'Lady Aghori' Arrested for Eating Human Flesh From Burning Pyre
A woman claiming to be an Aghori has been arrested in Ujjain after a video showed her removing human flesh from a burning funeral pyre and eating it, police have said.
The accused, identified as Kali Nand Giri, is active on social media and is known as the “Lady Aghori” of Ujjain. According to police, she was arrested on Tuesday after a video purportedly showing the incident surfaced online.
Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said a case was registered under Section 301 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following a complaint by Vishnunath Maharaj, who resides at a cremation ground in Ujjain.
Section 301 deals with offences involving unauthorised entry into burial or cremation grounds, disturbance of funeral rites and indignity to human corpses.
The court has sent the accused to 15 days of judicial custody, the SP said.
In the purported video, the woman is seen standing near a burning funeral pyre while holding a sword. She allegedly uses the sword to remove a piece of flesh from the pyre and places it aside before appearing to eat it.
The video prompted a complaint at the Jiwajiganj police station, following which an investigation was launched.
According to the complaint, Kali Nand Giri was born male and was previously known as Alluri Srinivas. She later underwent a gender transition and began identifying as transgender before establishing herself on social media as the “Lady Aghori.”
Police are also investigating her background and sources of income. She has a significant social media presence, where she is referred to as Ujjain's “Lady Aghori”. Her videos are often filmed at temples and other religious sites and feature spiritual rituals and discussions related to Sanatan Dharma.
SP Sharma said a detailed investigation into Giri's background was initiated after allegations emerged that she had deceived a student in Telangana and taken Rs 10 lakh from another woman on the pretext of conducting a tantric ritual.
“We are gathering information about these cases and investigating her sources of income,” the SP said.
The alleged incident has also drawn condemnation from Mahamandaleshwar Shaileshanand Giri of the Juna Akhara, who described the act as unacceptable in a civilised society.
