Shardiya Navratri 2026: 5 Things You Must Remove From Home Before Navratri Begins

Things to Remove Before Navratri
Shardiya Navratri 2026 will begin on October 11. During the nine-day festival, devotees worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga and perform rituals such as Kalash Sthapana, daily prayers, lighting diyas and observing fasts.

According to religious traditions and Vastu beliefs, Goddess Durga is believed to enter homes that are clean, pure and filled with positive energy. This is why thorough cleaning of every corner of the house before Navratri is considered especially important.

Vastu and Feng Shui traditions also associate broken, unused and damaged objects with negative energy. If you want to prepare your home for Navratri, these five things are traditionally recommended to be repaired, removed or replaced before the festivities begin.

1. Broken or Unused Electronic Items

Feng Shui places emphasis on getting rid of unused items and clutter, as they are traditionally believed to create stagnant or negative energy in the home.

Therefore, items such as broken clocks, televisions, washing machines, microwave ovens, mixers and refrigerators should either be repaired and put back into use or removed if they cannot be fixed.

Keeping damaged appliances lying unused around the house is considered inauspicious according to these traditional beliefs.

2. Broken Glass and Mirrors

Broken glass is traditionally considered inauspicious, while keeping broken pieces inside the house is believed to be even more undesirable.

According to Vastu beliefs, a cracked mirror or broken window should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. Keeping such damaged objects in the house is traditionally associated with financial difficulties, debt and monetary losses.

3. Stopped Clocks

According to Feng Shui beliefs, a moving clock is associated with the flow of positive energy. A clock that has stopped working, on the other hand, is traditionally considered a source of stagnant or negative energy.

If a clock in your home has stopped, it is advisable to get it repaired or remove it.

Feng Shui also considers certain clock shapes, including oval, round, octagonal and hexagonal designs, to be auspicious.

4. Torn Religious Pictures and Damaged Idols

Old, torn or damaged pictures of Hindu deities, as well as broken idols, are traditionally considered unsuitable for keeping in the home.

According to religious beliefs, such items should be respectfully removed rather than kept in a place of worship. Many traditions recommend immersing damaged idols or religious images in a sacred water body, wherever local customs and environmental rules permit, or following an appropriate temple/religious disposal practice.

5. Thorny Plants

Vastu traditions generally advise against keeping thorny plants inside the home. Such plants are believed to create tension and negatively affect harmony among family members.

Therefore, before Navratri begins, devotees who follow Vastu principles may consider removing thorny plants from living spaces and keeping the home clean and pleasant. ALSO READ: Sharadiya Navratri 2026: Maa Durga Will Arrive on This Vehicle, Know What It Means
