Why Is Khichdi Avoided on Thursdays and Sundays? Religious Beliefs Explained

Why not eat khichdi on Thursday
Khichdi is widely known as a simple and nutritious Indian meal, but according to Hindu traditions and astrological beliefs, it is often avoided on Thursdays and Sundays. These customs are rooted in religious symbolism, planetary associations, and long-standing cultural practices followed by many families.

Why Khichdi Is Avoided on Thursday

Thursday, or Brihaspativar, is dedicated to Lord Brihaspati (Jupiter), who is considered the guru of the gods and is associated with wisdom, prosperity, education, and family well-being. The day is also linked with the worship of Lord Vishnu, where the colour yellow holds special significance.

Traditional beliefs suggest that foods made with yellow moong dal, commonly used in khichdi, may not be ideal for consumption on this day. Some scriptures and customs state that preparing or eating khichdi on Thursday may reduce the positive influence of Jupiter in one’s life.

In addition, khichdi made with black urad dal is also avoided in some traditions, as it is considered inauspicious on Thursdays. It is believed that such combinations may lead to financial instability, domestic issues, or reduced harmony in the household.

Why Khichdi Is Avoided on Sunday

Sunday is dedicated to Lord Surya (the Sun God), who represents energy, vitality, confidence, and health. According to astrological traditions, certain foods are avoided on this day to maintain the Sun’s positive influence.

Black urad dal, often associated with Shani (Saturn), is considered incompatible with Sunday’s solar energy. Since Surya and Shani are believed to have opposing influences in Vedic astrology, consuming such foods on Sunday is thought to weaken the beneficial effects of the Sun.

As a result, some traditions advise against eating khichdi made with black dal on Sundays, linking it to possible effects such as low energy, health issues, or financial difficulties.
